Terror of Nagash

Starting the story

This is the website that I have put together for our D&D campaign. To get started, it would be great if you took a quick read of the World Setting section and the Fallcrest Background section.

Character Creation & Backstory

Walk down passage

OK, I think that the first step is that we should all create our characters. That’s pretty simple, just use the 4th Ed Player’s Handbook.

Also, in order to make the story work a little better, can you prepare a short (1 page?) backstory for your character. Try to keep you character of good alignment, but remember that characters with a darker past often make more interesting stories. When you think of your past, maybe these worlds help: guilt, self-righteous, revenge, grief, outcast, prejudice, duty, cowardic

Also, try not to create a backstory that is too dramatic or glorious. After all, you are still 1st level. It would seem anti-climatic to start a 1st level adventure if your backstory says that you had slayed dragons and emperors in your past!

As an idea, try answering the following questions:

  • Where were you born? What was your family and upbringing like?
  • How did you acquire your class? Self-taught or trained?
  • How did you acquire your starting equipment? Was it a gift or did you save up for it?
  • Do you keep in contact with anyone from your past: family, mentor, friend?
  • Are you religious? If so, what god do you follow?
  • What do you look like?
  • Do you have any unusual mannerisms?

The Hook

OK, I know the general idea for the adventure we are going to play, and I was hoping that you guys could help me work your characters into the story at the beginning. I’ve put in a little intro here:

Douven Staul is a kind old human priest who worships the path of Bahamut, the god of protection and justice. Douven has always been a vigilant and courageous man, but age and a battle-hardened existence have caught up with him, and he no longer has the strength and righteous vigour of his youth. He currently spends his waning years in the temple of Bahamut in Fallcrest, offering council and giving help to those in need.

Several months ago, Douven bid the other members of his temple farewell and headed out for Winterhaven, a small village about one week’s travel to the west of Fallcrest. He was tight-lipped about his reasons, but he did say something about a coming darkness and that evil must be stopped. Nobody has heard from Douven since, and people are starting to get worried. What happened to him?

Can you guys figure out how your characters work into the story by answering a few questions:

  • How do you know Douven Staul? Is he a mentor? A friend? Were you hired to find him?
  • Do your characters know each other? How did you all gather together?
Forum is up

So I just created the a new forum on the website. This should let us start discussions and talk about stuff. Just take a look at the forum link. I was also wondering what kind of characters everybody wants. I think that Russ and Craig have mentioned a couple of ideas, but what are you guys in for Chris and Sean?

Getting ready for the game

The game is on Friday m’men. If you could all get me a quick copy of your backstory, that would be totally rockin.

Let’s get the game on!

First session wrapped up

OK guys, so the first session has wrapped up. I wrote a quick wrap-up story for the adventure and posted it here Episode 1 – The Search For Douven.

You all gain experience for vanquishing the goblins and rescuing Douven. You all gain a level. In addition, here is the loot that you guys found in the final encounter:

  • 450 Gold: You find a collection of coins, trinkets and jewelery
  • 2 Potions of Healing: Among the scattered loot in the cavern, you find 2 small vials of clear blue liquid.
As a minor action, you may drink this potion and spend a healing surge. Instead of the hit points you would normally regain, you regain 10 hit points.
  • Dwarven Plate Mail +1: Crafted by the finest dwarven armorsmiths, this armor was gifted to Douven during his crusading days, and has provided protection to the aging priest ever since. However, once Douven was captured by Irontooth and his goblin bands, the goblin chieftan took a liking to the enchanted mail and used it for himself. You find the suit of armor underneath Irontooth’s wolf-hide cloak.
Gain +1 bonus to AC. Gain +1 bonus to all endurance checks. Daily Power (Healing): as a free action, you regain hit points as if you had spent a healing surge.
  • Rod of Corruption + 1: Staked into the ground in the center of the arcane ring of power, this short heavy rod is covered in mystic symbols. It magnifies and multiplies the Warlock curses afflicted upon your enemies.
Gain +1 bonus to all attack and damage rolls for warlock powers that include the “implement” keyword. On critical deal an additional +1d6 damage. Whenever a warlock’s pact boon is triggered, instead of taking its normal benefit, you can transfer your Warlock’s Curse to each enemy within 5 squares of original target.
  • Bag of Holding: Amid the piles of items in the chieftan’s cavern, you find a simple sack of brown canvas. However, upon further investigation, you find that it has some truly wondrous properties!
This bag can hold up to 200 pound of weight or 20 cubic feet of volume, but it always weighs only 1 pound. Drawing an item from the bag of holding is a minor action.

For the next session, I was wondering if you guys could do the following:

  • Level Up: Pick your new powers/feats. This is all described in the Player’s Handbook. Chris, I was figuring that you could start your character at level 2 next time, just to keep everything up to speed
  • Character Description: I know that we all had little sit down discussions about your characters. Most of the stuff that you guys have sent me is great, but they are kinda secrets between you and the GM. Would you mind writing up a brief description of your character so that I can post it on the site? It could describe stuff like your appearance, behaviour and other stuff you don’t mind the other players knowing
  • Character Picture: If you guys want to send me some kind of picture of your character, I could also post that on the site. That might be cool. You could scour the web, scan a book cover, scan a picture out of the D&D books, etc.
  • Episode 1 Mini-Story: If you guys want, it would be cool to write a little vignette story about some piece of the first session. You could write the story from your character’s perspective to really give us some flavour. Maybe there was a particular fight that caught your imagination, or maybe there was some negotiation that you wanted to write down. It doesn’t need to be the entire session, just one little encounter would be fine. I was figuring that a collection of these little stories, strung together, would be really cool.

Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas on how to make the next session even more interesting? I was thinking that each of you could come up with 1-2 quirks for your character that you could try to act out. For example, maybe Galt is a super-fast talker that never seems to pause for breath and is always excited for new treasure, or perhaps Paelias is quiet and stoic and talks with an elegant acccent, and maybe Balomir loves the scottish accent, etc. That would really help me write up the summary stories with a little flavour.

As for the next game, how are you guys for Friday Nov 14? Christine is away that weekend, so we won’t have any problems getting the house to ourselves.

Sean has sent me the story of Galt the halfling warlock. Ever wanted to know what his character was like? You can find the wickedly good story here Galt Roarke

Session stories are up

Craig did an awesome job and wrote up a summary of our last two sessions. You can find them here, under Episode 1 – The Search For Douven and Episode 2 – The Haunted Keep.

I have also added Russ’ background story here Paelias. Enjoy.

Initial, partial episode 3 story

I have also posted some important story vignettes from the last session, and you can find them here Episode 3 – The Past Catches Up.

Here is the treasure that you guys found last session:

Battle vs. The Order (Rescuing Galt)

  • Gems & Jewelry (300 gp): The senior member of the order was wearing elaborate jewelry, such as rings and bracelets. A sure sign that he was wealthy and influential.
  • 150 gp: The mercenaries that accompanied the order member carried some of their ill-gotten earnings in bags on their belts.
  • Clockwerk of Debilitating Languor: This device was used in an attempt to extract Galt’s soul for future torture and amusement by The Order. It is a small, delicate device made up of gears and gems. Because it was used in an attempt to cage Galt’s soul, there is an intimate connection between the small device and the halfling warlock. Galt finds that his abilities are amplified whenever he carries the gadget.
Listed as “Level 2, Amulet of Mental Resolve +1” in Adventurer’s Vault.
    Item Slot: Neck
Enhancement: +1 Fortitude, Reflex and Will
Property: Only useable by Galt. Gain a +2 item bonus to saving throws against effects with the charm, illusion, or sleep keyword.

Battle vs. Sir Morgan, The Castellan

  • 2 Potions of Healing: A clear blue liquid fills a bowl beside the throne where Sir Morgan sat. This refreshing draught rejuvinates injured warriors.
As a minor action, you may drink this potion and spend a healing surge. Instead of the hit points you would normally regain, you regain 10 hit points.
  • Sir Morgan’s Shield: Once the party had convinced Sir Morgan that they were not enemies and were trying to prevent the opening of the portal to the shadowfell, he gifted them with a unique and powerful shield. This shield has been crafted to resist the withering powers of the undead.
    Item Slot: Arms
    Heavy Shield
Property: Gain resist 5 to necrotic damage

Well we’ve finally figured out when our next game will be, Friday April 3. Just to remind you, make sure that your character is up to 3rd level for this one. Also, if you guys could send me an electronic copy of your characters, that would be great. That way, we can still play him if you cannot make it.

In addition, among the items that you were able to gather from Kalarel’s chamber before it collapsed you found a note.

Greetings Kalarel my lord.

Although you are no longer a member of our ranks, we have an offer for you that can profit us both. During your time in this region, if you should capture any humanoids, we are eager to buy them. We have duergar allies in Thunderspire in need of slave stock. If you are interested, send an envoy back to me. My messengers will show the way.

Chief Krand of the Bloodreavers

Sting recognizes the Bloodreavers as the slave-hunting marauders that captured his family many years ago.
